About Amelia Hard
I've been cooking in Portland, Oregon, for over 35 years: first at The Wood Stove (1974-1978), then at Genoa (1978-1992, as chef/owner from 1981-1992), and since then as a cooking instructor and a chef for special events (winemakers' dinners, benefits, etc.). I've also been involved in anti-hunger work as a volunteer event organizer and chef since 1988: first with Share Our Strength as co-founder of Portland's Taste of the Nation annual fundraiser and in helping to bring Share Our Strength's nutrition education program to Portland, then subsequently with Oregon Food Bank as a volunteer instructor teaching basic cooking skills to people on food assistance. My current focus is on creating a year-round indoor public market in Portland, to be named the James Beard Public Market in honor of Portland's most famous culinary son. Among my goals for our public market is to have it be accessible to low-income shoppers and to provide nutrition education classes.
