- 2011 Reader’s Survey: The Best Restaurants in Portland! (60)The 2012 results will be posted shortly! Here are the results of the reader survey of the best restaurants in Portland. The total number of votes was a bit daunting, but I narrowed them down to a group which stood far above the rest. Within each of the three groups, the votes were very close. The tally dropped off dramatically at that point, so I’m limiting the results to the top 18. You can see all of the survey results here. - Survey 2011: Best Bakery (6)
The results here are a bit unexpected for me. Over the past year it seems like all the talk has been about Little T, but the competition was baked by Ken’s Artisan Bakery.
Out of 1020 votes:
Ken’s Artisan Bakery – 338 Northwest 21st Avenue, Portland OR 97214 - (503) 248-2202 Map. 17% of the vote.

We all know who is going to come out on top in this vote, but I asked because I was curious to see who would come out second. Now I know, and am just going to keep my mouth shut. I should note that it was a VERY distant second, and the percentages for third were so far below as to be meaningless. Here are the results:

Podnah’s Pit – 66% of the vote. 1625 NE Killingsworth Portland, OR 97211 (503) 281-3700 - Survey 2011: Best Beer Bar (8)

Mother’s Bistro – 212 Southwest Stark St., Portland, OR 97204. (503) 464-1122 - Survey 2011: Best Chinese Restaurant in Portland (12)
We are finally starting to get some restaurants that, while they may not be fantastic, are certainly better than anything we had a few years ago. If you are into Sichuan food, Lucky Strike is the best in town. Wong’s King remains popular for dim sum, though I think there are better, especially if you are willing to head over to Beaverton. Ocean City is very popular with seafood lovers, but also has many traditional Chinese dishes too. Finally, Shandong is a rising star, quickly building a following for those in the Hollywood area of Portland. It is easily the best Chinese close to the city core.

Lucky Strike – 25% of the vote. 3862 Southeast Hawthorne Blvd., Portland, OR 97214 (503) 206-8292. Map

Last year Stumptown Coffee Roasters won by a significant margin. This year, Barista Coffeehouse surged and came very close to tying their score, with only 1% of the vote separating them. When you factor in the number of Stumptown stores versus the two Barista locations, it’s a pretty impressive showing. Ristretto Roasters bumped up to tie Coffeehouse NW for 3rd place.

Heart Coffee Roasters came out of nowhere. I like to think I’m pretty familiar with the Portland coffee scene, but I’ve never heard of them and had to ask around. Other scores that stood out from the pack: Crema, Extracto, Fresh Pot, Albina Press, Coava Coffee, Random Order and Legend.
Yes, another tie. What are the odds? I need to go buy a lottery ticket

- Survey 2011: Best Hamburger in Portland (21)
In 2010, Cafe Castagna ran roughshod over the competition for best hamburger. Slow Bar came in 2nd, and Carafe, Higgins and Castagna tied for 3rd.
This year Cafe Castagna once again stomped the other choices, but interestingly, the other restaurants all have opened in the last year.
Out of 1020 votes cast:
Cafe Castagna -11% of the total. 1758 SE Hawthorne Blvd. Portland, OR 97214. (503) 231-9959 Map

Tasty n Sons – 4.1%. 3808 North Williams Ave. Portland, OR 97227 (503) 621-1400 Map
My choice – not that anyone cares as this is a highly subjective category – is Cafe Castagna. The Grüner burger didn’t seem special to me, I’ve never had the Foster Burger, and though I enjoy Tasty N Sons version, it varies wildly from day-to-day – undercooked/overcooked/salt bomb. On a good day, it’s great. Toro Bravo was 4th.
Always the diplomat.

- Survey 2011: Best Happy Hour in Portland (0)
This vote restored some of my faith in readers picking some of the more interesting places in town rather than the most popular. I’m rather surprised by the outcome. Although we got a good number of votes, there was a huge spread in the number of restaurants nominated, which meant only a few had enough to stand out.
Out of 716 votes, a tie for first place!
Tanuki Izakaya -413 Northwest 21st Ave., Portland, OR 97209 (503) 241-7667 Map
Clyde Common -1014 Southwest Stark St., Portland, OR 97205 (503) 228-3333 Map
Spints Alehouse - 401 NE 28th Ave., Portland, OR 97232 (503) 847-2534 Map
No one else came close enough for 3rd place. Since many readers may not be familiar with these three restaurants, a bit about them below.
Tanuki: “In Okinawa there are little restaurants serving simple delicious foods to go with sake and beer. Often they are called “akachochin” after the identifying red lantern hanging outside or “izakaya”- a place where there is sake. We offer wonderful dishes from sake no sakana (food that goes with sake) to fresh delicious noodles, yoshoku (Japanese foods that created under the influence of the European traders that traveled to Japan), and Korean favorites. Please note that an izakaya is a place for adult relaxation and socializing. We do not allow children in our establishment. Tanuki is located in a historic building that is not wheelchair accessible.” Happy hour 4-6pm daily. Requires one drink purchase per person. Even during regular hours many items are very reasonably priced. See the menu for details.
Clyde Common: a “European style tavern”. Mon-Fri 3pm-6pm, late night 11pm to close. A selection of items such as French fries with harissa $3 – you want these, trust me, grilled baquette with Nutella, jam & hazelnuts $4, daily grilled cheese $6, and a 6oz. hamburger sandwich $6. I will get right to the results, and then a bit of discussion.

Channai Masala – 11%. 2088 NW Stucki Ave, Hillsboro, OR (503) 531-9500 Map
Honorable mention: Swagat – 2% behind #3.
East India Company is my first choice too. If you haven’t heard of it, check out my review. I used to live nearby, and went frequently, but the prices increased and I quit going Just now I went to update the prices in my review, and found they haven’t changed since 2008, which makes it considerably more affordable these days. I haven’t been to Vindalho since chef David Anderson left for Genoa, but I have enjoyed my meals there in the past. However, the two are different. From my EAC review “Though many people compare it to Vindalho the two restaurants have quite different goals, with the latter’s cuisine ranging wider and being more fusion. For straight Indian food, I think East India Company is the best in Portland, and it has steadily improved since they first opened”
Chennai Masala opened to rave reviews 3-4 years ago. Since then the owners have split, and the result has been food that is just ok. I used to drop in if I was in the area, but I had two really bad service experiences there, and won’t be going back.

- Survey 2011: Best Italian Restaurant in Portland (40)
This is another one of those questions where I was pretty sure what the top choice would be, but wanted to know what the others rated. I was a bit surprised, especially by the third choice. Maybe it is because it “feels” the most Italian of anywhere else in Portland that I can think of.

I have to say, after a few drinks, I’m heading to Cartopia. I like the vibe, and there are some heated tables to relax on while your pies are being made. I’ve never made it past Whiffies to Potato Champion, but that’s only because I have a weakness for pies. That being said, I have also been to Biwa many times for late night ramen. If I want to be inside or want to have something more substantial, that’s where I head.

- Survey 2011: Best Lebanese (5)
The results of this question in the survey don’t surprise me at all. I think the order should be switched, with the 3rd place coming in first, but I understand that most people are going to go for the least expensive choice.
This question had the smallest number of responses – only 19 restaurants in the list. Most of those got one vote. It also had one of the lowest number of people voting – 566. I can’t help but wonder if this is because the food isn’t popular in general, or if many folks just don’t recognize the vast difference between restaurants as you get away from the most basic dishes of the cuisine.

- Survey 2011: Best Lunch in Portland (6)
My vote would be lunch in a sunny park in Portland, but I suppose any of these restaurants could provide that, and give you a decent place to eat on a rainy day. One of the choices absolutely buttered everyone else in the survey results.
Out of 748 votes:
Bunk Sandwiches -26% of the vote. 621 Southeast Morrison St., Portland, OR 97214 (503) 477-9515 Map
Evoe -8%. 3735 Southeast Hawthorne Blvd., Portland, OR 97214 (503) 232-1010 Map
Blueplate Lunch Counter & Soda Fountain – 6%. 308 SW Washington St., Portland, OR 97204 (503) 295-2583 Map
Honorable mention: Tasty & Sons
My choice? Depends on my mood. I like all of the above. Bunk has only been open a few years, but it is already legendary. If you haven’t been to Evoe, here’s what Roger Porter had to say: “Evoe is somewhat like a tapas bar, the sheer informality of the place would seem to call for a less exalted grade. But gram for gram, it furnishes the most perfect collection of dishes I’ve experienced in town.” Blueplate is a bit like stepping back into the past; an old style Soda Fountain with daily sandwich specials, house-made sodas, egg-creams, and a variety of floats and milkshakes.

- Survey 2011: Best Mexican Restaurant (17)Once again, this survey pretty much followed along the lines I expected. Autentica has gotten more expensive, but I still feel it is a good deal. In my experience the service issues have been largely worked out, though they still have off days. ¿Por Que No? locations always have a line down the block, and I admire their commitment to their staff and to local sustainable ingredients. Nuestra Cocina is good, and used to be one of my favorite restaurants, but they need to shake things up. I was thinking the other day I haven’t been for a long time, because the menu doesn’t seem to have changed much over the years. Amazing. Out of 1011 votes, we have a tie. A TIE. Twice. I counted twice, and then built a pivot table to double-check, because I thought maybe I’d had too much bourbon. As you can see, there is quite a drop to 3rd place.

In 2010, Ken’s slightly edged out Apizza, with Nostrana in 3rd. Good showing for Dove Vivi. This year Nostrana and Hot Lips tied for 4th. Goodness. I’m just going to be quiet. I’m adding 4th because I think it’s cool that they tied.

- Survey 2011: Best Place for a Business Lunch (3)
As we wind down to the readers choice for Top Restaurants, we have three more survey results to post. The first few choices didn’t surprise me, but third choice made no sense to me, especially when compared to the others. I don’t have anything against the restaurant, it’s just that it has a totally different vibe.
Out of 610 votes:
Higgins Restaurant & Bar – 11% of the vote. 1239 SW Broadway, Portland, OR 97205 (503) 222-9070 Map (They FINALLY have a website!)

Little Bird – 4%. 219 Southwest 6th Ave., Portland, OR 97204 (503) 688-5952 Map
Honorable mention: Bluehour
Higgin’s restaurant has a classy, white linen feel to it, and I’ve had several business lunches there. However, you are more likely to find me in the bar, which is less formal, but still a good place to talk. The Heathman is similar – white linens and a fairly wide variety of dishes on the menu, though the food definitely has the “Jakes” touch. Little Bird is a French Bistro, a bit louder than the others, but with a focus on simpler food.

From the comments I’ve gotten, many of you feel that Portland has a long way to go as far as seafood is concerned. Many added notes lamenting the loss of Fin. I agree. For a city so close to rivers, lakes and the ocean, the state of our seafood is sad.

- Survey 2011: Best Vegetarian (8)
I’m not particularly interested in vegetarian restaurants, and I got lots of snarky comments when I put this in the survey. That being said, there are lots of people in Portland who this is important to, as well as restaurants that work their tails off to make them happy. The results here were split among many local restaurants, and no single one got a huge number of votes. The three top choices listed here were very close, with about 9%.

Honorable mentions: Andina – my review, Vita Cafe

- The Best of Portland 2011! (60)
Updated 4.29.
Here are the results from the our 2011 reader surveys. We had well over 1100 participants this year! A big thank you to all of our sponsors and participants!
A few notes: If the top two choices were significantly higher than the next choice, only they will be listed. If two businesses are listed on the same line, the difference was insignificant or they tied.
