Wine Down East Closes

This happened last week, but I didn’t know about it until today. Wine Down East over on NE Alberta, has closed.  The original restaurant which was on NE 28th,  closed at the end of 2009 after their landlord wouldn’t renew the lease.

WDE was in the space previously occupied by Zaytoon. They seemed to be terribly confused as to the direction they wanted to take, calling it a “wasabi bar”, serving so-so sushi and wine, along with pool… it just didn’t work.

It’s a nice building and a good location, but I’d bet the lease is pretty spendy. It will be interesting to see who tries to fill it next.

Oh my.  I went here this summer a few weeks after it opened and was blown away by how epically bad the service was.   Our server was clearly on some kind of amphetamine -his hands shook so much that he could only fill the water glass about halfway, spilling the rest on the table, and he was sweating profusely and wiping himself with his hands constantly.  The food itself was pretty solid (we stayed away from the sushi) but we high tailed it out of there when we saw our server eating garnishes out of the bar.  I think they were basil sprigs.
Funnily enough, as we left (and made it clear that we weren’t coming back), the owner sent the server after us with a $5 coupon to the place.  Too little, too late!
The competition on Alberta is fierce enough, being an awful establishment in a sea of good choices is just… bad business.

It sure was confusing, so confusing that I never even connected the two together until you just pointed it out, and I had eaten at Wine Down East on 28th more than once – haha!
