Jenn Louis of Lincoln restaurant in North Portland, Sunshine Tavern in SE, and Culinary Artistry has been named as one of the Best New Chefs 2012 by Food and Wine Magazine.
Honest, delicious, sustainable cuisine. “I don’t like too many ingredients or ideas jammed together. You lose the individual ingredients; they can’t be appreciated.”
Amen to that. According to the Oregonian, “The magazine solicits suggestions for nominees from former winners and journalists, then sends out scouts to eat at each restaurant. The previous Portland winners are Park Kitchen’s Scott Dolich in 2004, Le Pigeon’s Gabriel Rucker in 2007, Beast’s Naomi Pomeroy in 2009 and former Castagna chef Matt Lightner in 2010 (now with New York City’s Atera).”
The article includes a long interview of Jenn, and a bunch of recipes. You can it read here.

I have had a lot of really good food at Sunshine Tavern this past year. Good on ya Jenn!

Agree–was skeptical of Ms. Louis considering all the PR she seems to get, but a great experience at Sunshine made me eat crow. Great concept and food and with the family in tow, sure beats the hell out of the slop at Hopworks or Laurelwood.
Well deserved!

Congrats to Jenn’s PR agent. When I think of a great chef I think of someone who uses their talent and love of the craft to inspire others to do the same. While I can see the owners of Sunshine and Lincoln as successful small business owners and restauranteurs, I don’t necessarily see a chef at the helm.

I don’t think Jenn belongs with the previous winners. She must have an incredible PR machine. I’ve never had a memorable meal at either Lincoln or Sunshine.

What Portland chef hasn’t used PR to gain notice, press or awards? More power to you.
