Justin Wills Opens Sorella Restaurant on Oregon Coast

June 12, 2015 by PDX Food Dude 2 Comments

In 2012 and 2013, Chef Justin Wills of Restaurant Beck was a finalist for the Best Chef Northwest James Beard Award. For many, his Depoe Bay restaurant has become a destination. This week, Justin and his wife Stormee expanded, opening Sorella in Newport.

Unlike Beck which focused on local foraged and sourced ingredients and somewhat upscale ingredients like Foie Gras, Sorella is simple Italian Cuisine. The menu features Italian standards such as Caesar Salad, Calamari, a selection of Pizzas and Pasta as well as three entrees – currently Chicken Stew, Local Fin Fish, and Lamb Shank. Prices max out at $17, with most in the $15 range.

“Sorella is Italian for ‘sister’ and we’re continuing our tradition of naming our restaurants after our kids. Restaurant Beck is named after our son, Becker. Our daughter’s name is Isla, which didn’t sound Italian enough, so we decided on sister,” said Wills. “Sorella is going to have a familial vibe, casual, but with the high quality food we are known for. We want to be a family friendly restaurant you can drop by for a great meal while visiting the Oregon Coast.”

The menu will feature fresh, handmade pastas from Rigatoni with Bolognese to Angel Hair with Clam Sauce to Bucatini with Guanciale. The dinner menu will also include at least five pizzas per night, served out of classic Italian pizza oven. Appetizers include salads, crudos and antipasti. Entrees such as Chicken Stew with Polenta, inspired by a dish Justin’s nana prepared for him as a child as well as seafood-driven dishes inspired by the catch of the day from local purveyor Newell Seafoods round out the menu.

As parents, the Wills wanted to create a festive, family friendly atmosphere at Sorella, and to that end, will create both a kids menu and an area just for children to hang out and play. The kids menu will include smaller pasta portions, pizza and cheese panini with tomato soup.

Is the address listed correct? I thought Sorella was in Newport but the address above says Depoe Bay.

Very much enjoyed Sorella in Newport. Loved the atmosphere with the artisan wood work. Especially enjoyed the handmade pasta. It would be wonderful to have a similar restaurant near our community of Manzanita on the coast. We are fortunate to have the wonderful Blackbird in town, and Rising Star Cafe in nearby Wheeler. We look forward to adding to our group of wonderful restaurants – please put the word in to your contacts!
