Survey 2011: Best Late Night Snack

April 2, 2011 by PDX Food Dude 9 Comments

Bar at Biwa

Just in time for the weekend, our readers vote for the best place for a late-night snack.
Out of 760 votes:

  1. Cartopia at 12th and Hawthorne – 46% of the vote! Open 12pm – 3am.

When split into vendors, Potato Champion and Whiffies Fried Pies take the prize.

The others are a distant 2nd and 3rd:

  1. Biwa – 215 Southeast 9th Ave., Portland, OR 97214 (503) 239-8830 Daily 5pm to midnight. Happy hour 5 to 6:30 & 9pm – 10pm Map  Our review
  2. Beaker & Flask – 720 Southeast Sandy Blvd., Portland, OR 97214 (503) 235-8180 Mon-Wed 5pm – 12am, Thu-Sat 5pm – 1am. Map My review

Honorable mentions: Bunk Bar, The Gilt Club, Montage

I have to say, after a few drinks, I’m heading to Cartopia. I like the vibe, and there are some heated tables to relax on while your pies are being made. I’ve never made it past Whiffies to Potato Champion, but that’s only because I have a weakness for pies. That being said, I have also been to Biwa many times for late night ramen. If I want to be inside or want to have something more substantial, that’s where I head.

I can only assume Bunk Bar didn’t take this one because it’s relatively new and not a ton of people know about it yet/have been. Open just as late and they serve booze, unlike cartopia….oh and it’s warm inside! nevermind the latest sandwich I had there: Korean Fried Chicken and Kimchi. Sandwich of the Year 2011 frontrunner!

    Hi All,

To clarify, Biwa is open every night until midnight.

    Thanks

Thanks Biwa, I made the change. Do you still have a late happy hour?

Yes! From 9:00 until 10:00 at seats at the counter (11:00 on Friday & Saturday).

Sorry but if it’s before 12am, it’s not “late”. Only relatively speaking to the asinine 9pm and 10pm closing times seen unfortunately all too frequently around town.

blame the customers not the restaurants…..but yes, people in this town say they want late-night in the same way they want fine dining. What they want is the *option* of both, without ever going. I guess people want to live vicariously through the_idea_of patronizing these places. Sure would be great if you could pay vendors in daydreams!?

quite a few carts stay open past 12am. and, frankly, an increasing fraction of my “eating out dollars” now goes to carts.

Can’t agree more with the carts. Nicely satisfies my late night cravings with crepes, pies, pizza, and fries (and poutine). If the sandwiches and Mexican food were better I’d be in late-night, maybe-not-quite-sober heaven.
