New Seasons Market to Anchor Grant Park Village

By PDX Food Dude Last Update January 16, 2014 10 Comments

Locally owned and operated New Seasons Market today announced that it will open a neighborhood grocery store at Northeast Broadway and 32rd Avenue in the planned Grant Park Village, a new mixed-use project being developed by Portland-based Capstone Partners LLC. The vibrant 34,500 square foot store will serve as the anchor retail tenant and will be part of the project’s first phase, which also includes apartment units and structured parking.

“With each new store we have an opportunity to further build our regional food economy, create new jobs with great healthcare benefits and enhance our community partnerships,” said Lisa Sedlar, President and CEO of New Seasons Market. “This is an ideal site for us, as it sits at the intersection of great neighborhoods, schools, parks, bike routes and transit, and it will be a perfect complement to our Concordia and Hawthorne stores.”

Slated to open in the fall of 2014, this store will bring approximately 150 new jobs to the area, with New Seasons Market recruiting from the immediate community for local, friendly staff who know and understand the neighborhood best.

Okay I love New Seasons, I swear I do, but I don’t get their location decisions lately. First it was the N Williams and Fremont spot and now this one, both 2 miles from another New Seasons and less than a mile from a Whole Foods (I actually mapped this and it’s a little eerie how the relative distances match in both spots). And this one looks to be across the street from the soon-to-be-newly-remodeled-if-they-ever-finish Hollywood Fred Meyers. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that they have done a serious market analysis to back up their decisions. Someone please tell me they have, because it just feels excessive to me.

The NE 33rd store has become too crowded. I’ve avoided it during rush hour because it’s so hard to get in and out of the parking lot. My house is between these two locations. I will be thrilled with this new store, as long as it’s easy to get in and out of the parking lot!

Not to impugn new seasons, but parking lots have never been their strong point

What is it with upscale grocery stores and their parking lots? Every Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s I’ve ever been to has been a parking nightmare.

Any reason there isn’t a NW location??
Freddy’s, Zupans, Whole Foods and Safeway – New Seasons would be a nice NW addition.

I agree, PDXCDG. Northwest has Whole Foods in the Pearl and Food Front, but News Seasons is still out of easy bike and walk range. No fair!

Finally a store in central NE. That area has THREE Whole Foods and until now no New Seasons. About time.
