According to the Portland Business Journal, Lovejoy Bakers is opening a second location. The bakery and deli hopes to open in mid-September in The Emery Apartments. The current shop at 939 NW 10th Avenue is very popular with locals, and placed 7th in our 2013 Best Bakery in Portland roundup.
In the discussion section for the Best Vietnamese Restaurant survey, a commenter wrote that the popular restaurant chain, Pho Van was closing their SE Hawthorne store. I was surprised, because it seemed the restaurant was always crowded, but the Oregonian has confirmed the news.
Pho Van debuted their first Beijing location late last year, and owner Lam Van plans to open as many as 10 more.
“The Hawthorne lease is up, so we are closing it down,” Van said Friday. “It’s not a sure thing, but just based on the one location so far, it’s a lot easier to make money in China right now.”
There are still two locations: 1919 SE 892nd Ave., and 11651 SW Beaverton Hillsdale Hwy. They also have a more upscale restaurant in the Pearl District named Silk, but my recent visits there have left me unimpressed.
No snarky comment from me. I thought it would be a nice change.
Portland institution The Berlin Inn closed back on June 22nd. Now the Brooklyn House restaurant has opened their doors in the same spot. The eclectic “farm-to-table” menu is small and doesn’t focus on any particular cuisine. It features two sizes all menu items except for the entrees. Small plates range from $3 – $5, salads from $5 – $8, pastas from Tabla starting at $9, and 3 entrees around $22. The restaurant is located at 3131 SE 12th Ave, Portland 97202, and is open 4pm – 9:45 pm, Tuesday through Sunday.
