Reader Survey 2015: Best Bread Bakery in Portland

This year I decided to break out the question, “What is the Best Bread Bakery in Portland”. My reasoning is that there are some pretty decent places that specialize in cakes, pies, pastries and whatnot, but in many cases their bread is not that great, and vice versa. Proving my point, with close to the same number of votes, the order of winners is completely different than the “Best Bakery” category results.

One bit of commentary – I’ve got to say, I was shocked to see New Season’s Markets make this list.

1400 gluten lovers voted:

Philippe’s is amazing. I think many of the voters haven’t been or they would be higher on that list. Happy to see they’re at least noted!

Agreed with Alissa. It’s pretty amazing Frice Pastry isn’t listed under the Best Bakery category.

N Williams? Nope. With the constant construction, overcrowding, and bizarre changes to traffic & parking configuration, it’s like the city is trying to foster auto/bike accidents. As a driver, I avoid businesses on that street now.

Yes there are a number of good bread bakeries in Portland, but I hadn’t thought that I could actually truly get excited about bread. Not on the list at all, (and I’m shocked) Tabor Bread has done some things with their bread that makes me actually talk about it. A lot. And it seems like everyone who eats there becomes a fanatic. Whoever that woman is who owns it, she’s like the good witch of the fairy realms… a peaceful, magical woman who has a gift with ovens and dough. I’m not kidding.

Everyone reading this: if you agree that there must be something hideously wrong if New Seasons is on the list of top bread bakeries, then you might possibly deserve to eat the bread at Tabor Bread. On many days, I find myself unworthy…. But for a treat, I will bring a boule home to my housemates and then I will watch as all of the strictly gluten free people make “just a little exception.”

A little late here, but Mt Tabor Bread is the real deal, leaving all those other bakeries in the dust. Also a lovely place to have lunch. I’m writing this from my annual visit to the Bay Area, where I bought a giant round loaf of Porridge Bread made by Pain Bakery. It was $10 bucks people, and i haven’t been able to stop eating it with some strong olive oil. Maybe the best bread in the world!!!!!
